OBJECTIVES
- To learn the basics of public presentation speaking.
- To gain experience and feedback on your ability to communicate in a presenting style publicly- specifically a pregame Chapel service
EQUIPMENT
Be ready to take notes on the below videos and websites.
WORKOUT
Watch the following videos and reflect on the questions. You will discuss them with your coach.
- What are your habits when speaking publicly? What strengths come naturally?
- Do you already know of some areas of needed growth?
- How can you improve your ability to be organized and concise?
- How can you improve your body language and your voice/tone?
- If you want to hear more from this guy, there are tons of videos at his YouTube Channel
Millswyck Communications is a company that FCA has partnered with at times to train staff in public speaking. Read one of their online articles and if you'd like to - check out more of their website.
- What points did the author make that resonate with you? Challenge you? Why?
- What actions will you take?
Dr Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech is considered to be one of the most moving ones of our time. Listen to it again and consider not just the content, but also how he crafted it.
- What do you notice about how his speech is organized and flows?
- What does his imagery evoke in you?
- What do you notice about his tone, timing, tempo, and what words he emphasizes?
One of the invitations to public speaking to you might get is the opportunity to do a Pregame Chapel or Character Talk. Scott unpacks how to be a good steward of this opportunity!
- What practical steps can you take to improve in listening? Preparing? Executing? Following up?
One final resource for your consideration: Roger Lipe has offered to you the library of all of his Pregame Chapels.
REPLAY
To become excellent at Public Speaking takes some work and a lot of practice. Preparation enables a speaker to be organized and concise rather than ramble and potentially lose an audience. Strong opening lines and a clear flow can capture their attention. Preparation and practice also enable a speaker to not rely on their notes or slides, but maintain a conversational tone. Eye contact and laughter can help with connection. Body language, voice inflection and proper pauses can assist in making powerful points. If anything can be emphasized, it is to prepare and practice so that you may be a good steward of any speaking opportunity.
One of the valuable speaking opportunities is a pre-game chapel or character talk.
PRACTICE
Prepare and present a pre-game Chapel that will be giving on Easter weekend. You may pick any sport of your choice and determine who will be there and when/where it will be held. You are limited to 8 minutes. Give this rubric
to someone else who will assess your presentation. You will have to repeat your presentation if you exceed your time limit.
This exercise is given because if you only ever get ONE opportunity to do a pre-game chapel, there is a decent chance it will occur on Easter weekend. If it is more relevant and challenging to your context to have to prepare a generalized character talk that is not Faith Specific, discuss that with your coach and consider changing your practice.
DEBRIEF
Write a reflection on your chapel presentation. Evaluate your score. Discuss strengths and areas for growth. Turn in your reflection as well as your Chapel speaking Notes
