Training Session #2What's a Win?
OBJECTIVES
- To understand the “McCown Sports Ministry Map” and how it relates to sports ministry.
- To embody character traits and skills required to be excellent in the quadrants of the Map relevant to your context.
- To understand that your ministry may not look the same as a fellow sports minister due to the variety of models of sports ministry/chaplaincy and various quadrants in which you might operate.
EQUIPMENT
Download:
Sports Ministry Map - A more detailed version of the video Roger presents.
What's a Win? - an example of what E3 can look like within the 5 areas of an Athletic Department.
E3 Strategies Through A Collegiate Lens - examples of how you could Engage, Equip, and Empower aligned within the 4 C's (Coaches, Campus, Camps, Community) from the perspective of your campus.
E3 Brainstorming Tool - brainstorm how you can Engage, Equip and Empower on your campus.
WORKOUT
Watch the following videos and reflect on the questions. You will discuss them with your coach.
Roger simply explains the McCown Sport in Ministry Map. Your download reflects the many different ways your ministry should morph to reflect the needs and attributes of the people you are serving. The college athletic department is full of people in Quadrant 2 & 4. The high school campus is likely full of people in Quadrants 1 & 3. A Club could have people in all Four Quadrants.
Watch the first video if you are a collegiate rep, watch the second video if you are not:
- Within what quadrant of the McCown Sports Ministry Map have you lived most of your life? If Quadrant 1 or 3, how will you need to contextualize the Gospel to those living in quadrants 2&4?
- In Quadrants 2 & 4, discussing the sports experience of a particular athlete is superior to your own sports stories…discussing an athlete or coach’s performance is superior to discussing winning…and a relational approach is superior and necessary compared with a programmatic approach - why is this so?
- You can have mass appeal for quadrant 1 and must have specialized appeal for quadrant 4- why is this so?
- Ministry to those in quadrant 3 is rather simple while ministry to those in quadrant 2 is very complex- why is this so?
- How might you need to alter your mindset or approach to minister effectively within your context?
Your role as a Sports Chaplain/Character Coach is to help coaches grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church - we help them move from quadrant 2 to quadrant 4 or quadrant 1 to quadrant 3. You should also be familiar with FCA's method for this - E3 - engage, equip, and empower. But how do you explain that to the coaches and athletes you serve? Marla explains a picture she has used to intentionally think and plan for campus ministry. She has also drawn it on many napkins as she invites coaches and athletes into a discipling relationship.
- Have you ever been a part of a movement where multiplication like this was happening? What did you see God do? How did he use leaders?
But there's always the uniqueness of how you are gifted as well as the context where you serve. You might have really open doors and you also might have to think outside of the box. We will conclude with considering various ways your ministry could look like on your campus. But regardless, please understand this principle:
Get Low and Go Slow
Stay humble and be patient. The Lord will show you what you should do and when, if you stop long enough to listen.
- What do you expect the work on your campus to look like? Why?
- Is there a model that you are particularly drawn to?
- Which one is most feasible for you and your campus right now?
REPLAY
Based on 2 Timothy 2:2, we know that the “win” is disciples who make disciples! In campus sports that looks like the empowered coach and athlete who multiplies their lives- both given their current season of life and in the years to come. In order to Engage (help them become aware and get involved), Equip (challenge them to own) and Empower (multiply) Coaches and Athletes, we must understand their mindset (what quadrant of the Sports Ministry Map they live in). A wise Sports Minister will have the sober self-assessment to identify their own quadrant and then contextualize the Gospel to the quadrant their ministering to. FCA ministry might look different from campus to campus, but if you will "get low and go slow", the Lord will direct you as you serve the coaches and athletes entrusted to you.
PRACTICE
Think of a specific athlete or coach that you know. What "base" are they on? How can you invite and challenge them to "go to the next base"? Use the concepts represented in the Sports Ministry Map and any brainstorming from the E3 tools provided to at minimum develop some talking points for a conversation with them. If possible, go ahead and have that conversation with them.
DEBRIEF
Turn in either 1- your conversation talking point or 2- a summary of how that conversation went. If you would rather record a video of you role-playing it, you can turn that in as well.
